Of all my walks through the neighborhood, I’ve only ever spotted one of these trees. It stands along one of the two paths that lead off my street, so I pass it often—and ever since discovering it last summer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting its bloom.
It’s called Pineapple Guava, or Guavasteen, and its blossoms are among the most intriguing I’ve seen on a tree—vivid, detailed, and full of color. Just this week, the first blooms appeared, and it won’t be long before the whole tree bursts into flower.
Both the blossoms and the fruit are edible. The fruit is known for its sweet-tart flavor, with a pear-like texture, while the flowers offer a sweet, fruity taste that’s lovely in salads or even made into jelly. Enjoy!
