The History of Earth Day

Following the Santa Barbara oil spill, the idea for Earth Day was born.

"On January 28, 1969, a well-known oil spill called Platform A, drilled by Union Oil 6 miles (10 km) off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, blew out. More than 3 million U.S. gallons (2.5 million imperial gallons; 11 million liters) of oil spilled, killing more than 10,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions.  (Earth_Day)

In 1969, at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to be first observed on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.
A month later, after traveling to Santa Barbara to witness the scale of the disaster, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had the idea of creating a day to promote environmental protection on American campuses. He then hired Denis Hayes, then a student at Harvard Law School, to lead the project. This is how Earth Day was born and first observed on April 22, 1970. Hayes founded the Earth Day Network and expanded it to more than 180 nations.

More than 1 billion people globally now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. (UNESCO)

On April 22, 2025, celebrate Earth Day with us! Together, let's take care of our Earth.

Earth is a wonderful planet to live on. It offers us the four natural elements: water, fire, air and wind. These elements gives us life and warmth, seasonal changes and opportunities to grow and make things. Earth’s natural resources such as minerals, fossil fuels, soil and plants also provide us with materials to grow food, make shelters and other resources. This is essential for humans to survive, to stay healthy and have quality of life.

Unfortunately, our earth has been gradually destroyed by the misuse of resources and wastefulness, apathy and by greed and profiteering. Unless we look after our planet, we will not have a place to call home for future generations.

The earth delivers much over time. Many of its attributes provide what is needed for survival. But sometimes we need a little dance for happiness.
